Substrate types, depth, and how to hold a stable humidity range through Indian seasons without tipping into mould or stagnant air.

Common substrate types

Coco fibre (coir) is the most widely available moisture-retentive substrate in India and holds an even dampness without becoming waterlogged. Sphagnum moss is often layered on top or mixed in for extra humidity buffering. Orchid bark and sand-soil blends drain faster and suit drier setups. Bioactive substrate blends combine several of these with leaf litter, and sometimes springtails or isopods, to create a substrate that partially maintains itself.

Depth

A shallow layer — a few centimetres — is enough where substrate only needs to retain moisture and support easy spot-cleaning. Setups meant to support burrowing behaviour need considerably more depth, often 10–15cm or more, packed firmly enough to hold a tunnel shape. Check the intended use of a substrate blend before assuming a shallow layer will do.

Managing humidity through the seasons

Indian humidity swings widely between monsoon and dry-season months. A hygrometer — not a visual guess — is the only reliable way to track actual enclosure humidity. To raise humidity, mist the enclosure walls and decor lightly rather than soaking the substrate directly, and consider partially covering ventilation to slow moisture loss between mistings. To lower humidity during monsoon months, increase airflow and reduce misting frequency rather than removing substrate.

Recognising mould and staleness

White or coloured fuzzy patches, a sour or ammonia smell, or a slimy texture on the substrate surface all indicate mould or bacterial buildup — usually from poor ventilation combined with excess moisture, or decomposing leftover food. Spot-clean affected areas immediately and re-check ventilation and misting frequency.
